South Block is Scotland’s Best
The South Block studio complex situated at King Street in Glasgow’s Merchant City has been awarded the prestigious Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland award by the Royal Incorporation of Architects.
Nord Architecture, who redesigned the interior, attended the Scottish Parliament on Thursday night to collect their award from Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop after the building was selected from a shortlist of 12 properties from across Scotland. As well as being crowned the best building, Nord Architecture were also presented with a £25,000 cheque and a gold medal.
Richard Rae, Managing Director of City Property Glasgow (Investments) LLP who own the building stated; “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Nord Architecture and WASPS on winning such an influential award. The innovation of their design has transformed the building into one that appeals greatly to the creative industries due to the unique studio space now available.
Wasps Studios, a charity who specialise in providing affordable space to artists and who currently lease the property; now have 96 studios, workshops and office space available within the building. This award further highlights the good work they do in supporting Glasgow’s creative community.
Glasgow will be very much in focus throughout 2014 and it is more important than ever that the support is available for grass root arts activity and cultural organisations to have access to space in which to work and exhibit. In an effort to assist these organisations, we plan to introduce a number of pop-up shops within the artist’s quarter of Merchant City in the near future. Available to artists, art groups and community organisations, these units will available on affordable short-term contracts that are often the barriers preventing artists from taking up property.”
